Precor EFX Ellipticals, How to Remove and Replace a Stairarm

This article covers the steps on how to replace the stairarm on a Precor EFX elliptical. The stairarm connects to the drive assembly in the back of the machine. The stairarm includes the pedal and wheel assembly that runs along the ramp while exercising.

The following are the basic steps for replacing the stairarm. Some steps may vary based on the age of your machine and if your machine has upper body motion.

Stairarms can be replaced individually. The steps to remove one stairarm can be repeated on the opposite side to remove the other stairarm.

Tools Required:

  • Snap Ring Pliers
  • Screwdriver Set
  • US and Metric Socket Wrench Set
  • US and Metric End Wrench Set
  • Allen Wrench Set
  • Torque wrench, 200 in./lbs.

Procedure to Replace a Stairarm:

Steps to Replacing a Stairarm on a Precor EFX Elliptical:

  Caution

Disconnect power before performing any service operations. Disconnect the power cord (if equipped) from the wall outlet. Disconnect the positive (red) lead from the battery. Movement of the machine parts can cause potentially hazardous voltage, even if the battery is disconnected. Removing the machine's covers exposes you to potentially hazardous voltage and dangerous machinery. Exercise caution when performing repairs. Be aware of moving parts, pinch points, electrical components, and heat with voltage exposure.

Removing a Stairarm

  1. Remove the rear cover for the stairarm that needs to be replaced. Do this by removing either of the two screws at the rear of the rear covers. If removing the left side, grab and rotate it clockwise to remove it. Grab and rotate counterclockwise, the right side cover to remove it. You will do the reverse to install the left and right side rear covers.
  2. Remove the cover from the rear of the stairarm. The retaining screw for the cover is on the inside. Access the screw from the opposite side of the machine. Rotate the stairarm carefully to a position just past vertical, to gain access to the retaining screw for the cover from the rear of the stairarm.
  3. If your wheels are not hidden, below ramp covers, skip to Step 8 of removing a stairarm. Remove the lift covers. Click here to read about how to remove the lift covers.
  4. Remove the center ramp cover. Do this by grabbing hold of the center ramp cover and lifting it upwards. This will unsnap the cover from the ramp. Set the cover to the side.
  5. Remove the ramp end cap at the front of the machine. Do this by removing the two screws that fasten the cap to the ramp.
  6. Remove the ramp trim for the side the stairarm is being removed for access to the stairarm wheel. Do this by loosening, not removing, the five screws that fasten the ramp trim, on the side being serviced, to the ramp. Remove the ramp trim by sliding it off the front of the ramp.
  7. For units without upper body, skip to Step 8.
For units with upper body, continue as follows. Remove the plastic cap from the connector point of the upper body arm to the stairarm. Remove the bolt that attaches the upper body stairarm connector to the stairarm. Set the hardware removed aside for later use. You should have the bolt, two washers, a steel spacer, and a large black spacer.
  8. Remove the snap ring that attaches the stairarm to the crank arm. Remove the stairarm from the machine.

Installing a Stairarm

  1. Remove the stairarm pedal and install it onto the new replacement stairarm. Do this by removing the four screws holding the pedal to the stairarm. Install the screws and spacers (if needed) into the pedal after placing it onto the new replacement stairarm. Tighten the hardware.
  2. Remove both wheels and covers (if equipped) from the old stairarm and install them onto the new stairarm. Tighten the hardware.
Wheels hidden below ramp covers - tighten the wheel mounting screws to 180 in/lbs.
Wheels not hidden below ramp covers - tighten the four, wheel and cover assembly, mounting screws to 70 in/lbs.
  3. Put the stairarm onto the crank arm and set the stairarm into the ramp track. Attach the stairarm to the crank arm with the snap ring removed in Step 8 of Removing a Stairarm.
  4. For units without upper body, skip to Step 5.
For units with upper body, continue as follows. Install the hardware for the stairarm connector removed in Step 7 of Removing a Stairarm. First, slide the large black spacer onto the mounting position of the new replacement stairarm. Next, slide the steel spacer into the end of the stairarm connector. You will place a washer on each side of the steel spacer at the end of the stairarm connector. You will fasten the stairarm connector to the stairarm with the remaining bolt.
  5. Check the unit for operation. If your wheels are not hidden below a ramp cover, skip to Step 12.
  6. Reinstall the ramp trim removed in step 6 of Removing a Stairarm. Align the ramp trim T-nuts with the channel in the bottom front of the ramp where you removed it. Slip the trim onto the ramp as each T-nut feeds into the ramp channel. Do not tighten the hardware. Repeat on the opposite side, if both sides are being serviced.
  7. Reinstall the ramp end cap at the front of the machine and keep it in place with the two screws removed in Step 5 of Removing a Stairarm.
  8. Now, align the ramp end cap with the ramp trim, and tighten the five fastening screws for the trim.
  9. Return the center ramp cover to its original position on the ramp. Press down on the cover to snap it back into place on the ramp.
  10. Reinstall the lift cover. Click here to read about replacing the lift covers.
  11. Put the stairarm cover back in place. This was removed in Step 2 of Removing a Stairarm.
  12. Reinstall the left and right rear covers. Press and turn the rear right side cover clockwise into place. Press and turn the rear left side cover counterclockwise into place. Reinstall the two screws at the rear of the covers.
  13. Perform final performance check for machine operation.

This completes the replacement of a stairarm on a Precor EFX elliptical.
