Assault AirBike, How to Replace the Right Bell Crank with Chain Wheel

Learn how to replace the right bell crank and chain wheel on an Assault AirBike.

The basics of replacing the right bell crank and chain wheel are the same for the Classic, Pro, and Elite bike models by Assault.

Tools Needed:

  • 8mm Hex Wrench
  • Phillips Screwdriver
  • Needle Nose Pliers
  • Crank Puller (22mm)
  • Crescent or Adjustable Wrench

Procedure:

  1. Remove the crank arm and pedal assembly from the right side of the bike. Right as if you are sitting on the bike. Click here for help with removing the crank arm.
  2. Separate the crank arm and pedal assembly from the bike.
  3. Remove the outer wave washer and set it aside.
  4. Lower the right upright arm clockwise and the left end counterclockwise. You want the right upright arm resting on the ground and the linkage arm hanging straight down.
  5. Remove the inner wave washer from the bell crank spindle.
  6. Using the Phillips screwdriver, remove the four screws from the right chain cover. The fourth screw is in the bottom of the chain cover. You must tilt the bike to access the screw.
  7. Remove the chain cover.
  8. Rotate the right chain until you identify the master link.
  9. First, remove the spring clip off the master link using the needle nose pliers.
  10. Next, remove the remaining pieces of the master link from the chain. Remove the flat plate and the backer plate with pins.
  11. Remove the chain.
  12. Remove the crank bolt from the right bell crank and chain wheel. You will need the 8mm hex wrench. You will turn the bolt left (counterclockwise) to loosen and remove.
  13. Again, you will thread the crank puller in the place of the crank bolt. Remove the right bell crank following the same steps as when removing the pedal crank arm. Click here to watch a video about using a crank puller.
  14. Install the new right bell crank with chain sprocket. Apply threadlocker to the crank bolt before installing it into the bell crank.
  15. Tighten the crank bolt to secure the right bell crank with chain wheel onto the bottom bracket shaft.
  16. Re-install the chain. Place the chain around the sprockets connecting the ends with the backer plate and pins of the master link. Place the flat plate against the chain over the pins and install the spring clip onto the master link.
  17. Re-install the chain cover. Secure in place with the four screws removed earlier.
  18. Re-install the inner washer, previously removed, onto the bell crank spindle.
  19. Re-connect the linkage arm by raising the right upright arm from the ground as you place the linkage arm back in its original position onto the bell crank.
  20. Re-install the outer washer that was removed earlier.
  21. Re-install the pedal and crank assembly onto the shaft. Apply threadlocker to the crank bolt before installing and tightening it into the shaft.
  22. Check bike operation.

This completes replacing the right bell crank with chain wheel on an Assault AirBike.
