Bowflex Dumbbells, SelectTech 1090, DB1090, 710000 and 001-4551, How To Perform a Lock Test

This lock test is a helpful troubleshooting guide for your SelectTech 1090 dumbbells by Bowflex. The lock test allows you to confirm the fit and function of the dumbbell handle and plate assembly.

Note: Before beginning the lock test, inspect your handle assembly for damage. Push down on each of the selection discs with your thumbs. Make sure there is no damage to the discs. Click here to read more about inspecting the handle and selection discs.

Performing a Lock Test:

  • Begin with the dumbbell in the dumbbell base.
  • Turn the adjustment knobs on each end to the lowest number.
    • You will feel the knobs settle into a spot and you will know the number is fully and correctly selected.
      • You will hear a slight clicking noise that relates to the spot, a notch or detent for each number.
  • The handle should now be able to be removed from the base with no weight plates. The plates should remain in the base.
  • After removing the handle from the base, grab an adjustment knob with your opposite hand and try to rotate or turn the knob; it should not turn.
    • If the knob turns, the handle needs to be replaced.
    • Test both knobs on the handle. If either knob turns, the handle needs to be replaced.
  • Place the dumbbell back into the base. Turn the adjustment knobs to the next lowest weight setting.
  • Lift the handle from the base about 1 inch above the base.
  • While holding the handle above the base, grab an adjustment knob with your opposite hand and try to turn or rotate the knob; it should not turn. A locking pin within the mechanism should engage the rotational assembly when the handle is removed from the base.
  • Repeat the lock test for all weight settings on the dumbbells.
