Bowflex Dumbbells, SelectTech, The Adjustment Knob or Dial Is Stuck; Knob Does Not Turn

Are you having trouble with the adjustment knob or dial on your Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells? Is the knob or dial stuck; It will not turn?

Sportsmith has some helpful tips on  common issues and the steps you can take to troubleshoot them.

Common Issues:

  • Adjustment knob or dial will not turn
  • Adjustment knob or dial is stuck
  • Selection dial or knob won't move

Handle and Plate Inspection:

  • Turn the adjustment knobs or selection dials on your handle to the lowest weight setting.
    • SelectTech 1090 dumbbells have a lowest weight setting of 10 lbs.
  • Remove the handle from the base and set it on the floor or another level and stable surface.
  • Flip the empty handle over to expose the black locking mechanism button. See the example below. The arrow in the example shows the button for the black locking mechanism.

  • With a blunt object, carefully press the button of the black locking mechanism. Hold the button while turning the adjustment knob or selection dial to the lowest setting. Watch Your Fingers!
If the dial still does not turn, replace the handle.
  • Make sure the handle can be fully inserted into the base. If the handle will not insert into the base fully, click here to learn about why the handle will not fit in the base.
  • Check to see if any weight plates are stuck in the handle. If any weights are stuck in the handle, click here to learn why the handle will not fit into the base.
  • Make sure the weight plates are all facing the same direction and align properly. Make sure that plates are installed with the locking tab facing out toward the knobs or dials. The tabs should not face the handle or grip of the dumbbell.
  • Thoroughly inspect the base for debris or obstructions that can get in the way. Debris can hinder the selection dials, or damage the tabs for the locking mechanism. Remove any obstructions, or debris you find. Replace the base if damage exists.
  • If, after all this, the issue still exists, remove all the weight plates from the base. Test the handle again in the base with 1 pair of weight plates at a time. Add a pair of weight plates and test the selection knob or dial again. Repeat the steps after each added pair of weight plates.
    • If the problem occurs when a specific plate is added, replace the affected plate or plates.
    • If the problem still exists after completely reassembling everything, replace the handle.
  • Reassemble all parts and perform a lock test. Click here to learn how to perform a lock test.

This completes the steps to help troubleshoot and diagnose an adjustment knob or dial that is stuck and does not turn on Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells.
