A bike chain should last several thousand miles. The conditions the chain is exposed to and the care the chain receives can impact how long it will last. Exposure and lack of proper care can reduce chain life to a few hundred miles.

A worn chain will show signs of stiffness and/or stretching. The links may become stiff and no longer move easily. Slack may develop in the chain. You may hear noises from the chain resulting from the stiffness and/or slack.
