Schwinn Indoor Cycles, IC Pro, Brake Pad Redisgn is Cross-Compatible

Over the years, Schwinn changed the factory where their IC Pro exercise bikes were produced. First, the bikes were made by Tonic, after which they switched to Land America. As some of you may be aware, the brake pad was redesigned with the change of factories. This was a result of a patent held by the original factory. The pads are cross-compatible. That means the original design can replace the new design and vice versa.

Looking at your brake pad design and not seeing how you can replace yours with the other? We can help.

If you are replacing the new design with the original design or vice versa you will not re-use any of the hardware from your existing pads being replaced. You will use only the hardware supplied with your replacement pads.

If the pads you are replacing are the new design from Land America, the caliper attaches to the brake pad with a plate and two screws. See the example below.

If the pads you are replacing are the original design from Tonic, the caliper attaches to the brake pad with a single bolt, washers, and a spring. See the examples below.

Replacing the New Design Brake Pads with the Original Design Brake Pads

  • You will discard the plates and screws attaching the new design pads to your calipers.

The piece of the caliper that is held onto the brake pad in the example above, by the plate and two screws, fits over the single screw position on the original style brake pad indicated by the arrow in the following examples. You will place the caliper over the spot on the original design brake pad with the threaded insert for the single bolt. You will attach the brake pad with the washers, spring, and bolt that came with the original design brake pad.

Replacing the Original Design Brake Pads with the New Design Brake Pads

  • You will discard the bolts, washers, and springs attaching the original design brake pads and use the hardware included with the new design brake pads.
  • You will place the caliper over the spot on the new design brake pad and put the plate that came with the replacement new design pads over the caliper.
  • You will install two of the included screws to hold the caliper in place on the new design pad.
    • Sportsmith does not offer the new design brake pads.
