Schwinn Airdyne, AD6, How to Adjust the Drive and Crank Belts on an Airdyne 6

We show you how to adjust the drive and crank belts on a Schwinn AD6 Airdyne exercise bike.

The crank belt is the cogged or toothed belt that fits around the crank pulley (main pulley). The drive belt is the ribbed belt that fits around the ribbed idler pulley and connects to the fan.

Tools Needed:

  • 14mm Socket and Wrench
  • 10mm Open-End Wrench
  • #2 Phillips Screwdriver
  • 4mm Hex Wrench

How to Adjust the Drive and Crank Belts of a Schwinn Airdyne AD6:

Remove the batteries from the console and allow the bike to sit for 5 minutes. Removing the batteries and letting the bike sit 5 minutes before beginning your repairs will help reduce the risk of electrical shock. Doing this also puts the bike out of order; preventing anyone from starting an exercise that interferes with your ability to do the repair.

  1. Remove the shrouds to expose the belts. Click here for help with removing the shrouds.
  2. Inspect the belts. At the midway point, you should barely be able to push down. If you have a tension gauge, the crank belt is 700-800N and the drive belt is 400N.
  3. Adjust the belts; you will do this with the 10mm open-end wrench. The crank belt tensioner is located with the idler pulley. See the example below.

Make gradual adjustments, 1/4 turn, on each side of the bike. Turn the tension adjustment nut clockwise (righty-tighty) to increase belt tension. Turn the tension adjustment counter-clockwise (lefty-loosey) to decrease the belt tension. Keep adjusting until you can barely press down on the belt at its midway point.
  4. If you tightened the adjustment bolts on both sides, and the drive belt still has play, tighten the adjustment nuts on the fan tension adjusters. See the example below.

Like the crank belt, turn the tension adjustment nut clockwise (righty-tighty) to increase belt tension.  Make gradual adjustments, 1/4 turn, on each side of the bike. Keep adjusting until you can barely press down on the belt at its midway point.

  5. Check the machine operation. Reassemble. Reassembly is the opposite of parts removal in this procedure.

This completes the steps and what you need to know about how to adjust the belts on your Schwinn AD6 Airdyne.
