This video demonstrates how to properly maintain your Lemond Revmaster with regular monthly maintenance.
Tools Needed
- 15mm Pedal Wrench
- Equipment Cleaning Wipes, Soap, and Water, or a Proper Cleaning Solution
- WD-40
- Lint Free cloth
- 3-n-1 Oil or Leather Conditioner
- Torque Wrench
Procedure
Any good maintenance program starts with your daily routine. Note that the left and right sides are determined as if you are on the bike.
Daily Recommended Maintenance:
- Using a 15mm wrench make sure the pedals are tightened fully into the crank arms.
- Turn the left pedal counter-clockwise to tighten.
- Turn the right side clockwise to tighten.
- Inspect the pedals for loose or missing hardware.
- Inspect the straps for wear or damage.
- Wipe down the machine daily with soap and water or a diluted, non-abrasive cleaning solution or use Sportsmith's equipment wipes.
- You just want to wipe it down every day to make sure no sweat or contaminants sit on the equipment and get under the paint or chrome and begin the corroding.
- Don't forget to wipe down the inside of the handlebar and seat posts on the frame as well as the slide portion of the seat and handlebar to be sure that nothing gets to set in this area and begin the rusting process.
Weekly Recommended Maintenance:
-
-
- Apply a light coat of WD-40 to the flywheel with a cloth.
- Spray the WD-40 onto the cloth first then use the cloth to apply the lube.
- Check the crank bolts to make sure they are tight by grabbing the end connected to the pedal and trying to move the crank arm toward and away from the frame.
- If you feel any looseness here you will want to inspect the torque on them.
- If you have problems with the bolts repeatedly coming loose, remove the bolt and apply a drop of medium thread locker. CAUTION: It is important to let the thread locker dry before using.
- Then re-install the bolt to the recommended torque.
- If while inspecting your brake pad you notice it's dry or cracked you can remove the bottle holder and pilot, then carefully set the bike upside down on the handlebars and seat and apply some 3-n-1 oil to it and let it sit for several minutes so that the oil is absorbed.
- Before turning the bike back over wipe off any excess oil with a cloth, and try not to let any of the oil get on the sides of the flywheel.
- Apply a light coat of WD-40 to the flywheel with a cloth.
-
Monthly maintenance:
- You are feeling for slippage of the belt.
- Correct belt tension is set when the belt will slip just a bit during this procedure.
- Try moving quickly forward and backward to see if the belt will slip.
- Mount the bike and check the belt tension by standing on the pedals while they are parallel to the ground and moving forward and backward as shown in the video.
- It is very important that you do not over-tighten the belt.
- Inspect the belt visually for damage such as fraying or cracks.
- These are both indicators of a belt in need of replacement.
- Also if you have no adjustment left on the tensioner and the belt slips excessively this also indicates the belt needs replaced.
- Once a month you also want to check for play in the spindle.
- To do this use a rubber mallet to tap on the crank arms while watching from above, as shown in the video, to see if there is any play back and forth in the spindle.
- If so you will want to remove the crank arms and inspect the bottom bracket cups and spindle.
- You may be able to re-adjust the bottom bracket cups, or you may have to replace them or the spindle for proper adjustment.
- To do this use a rubber mallet to tap on the crank arms while watching from above, as shown in the video, to see if there is any play back and forth in the spindle.
- This concludes the demonstration of monthly maintenance for the LeMond RevMaster bike.
