This video covers verifying the software version and uploading software on the Stairmaster SM916 Stepmill.
Important Note: Anytime you are updating software or reconfiguring a machine, any data stored in the machine will be lost. It may be necessary to log any pertinent details prior to updating your software or reconfiguring the console.
Tools Needed:
- FISP or Dongle (software uploader)
- Phillips Screwdriver
Procedure:
- Using the Machine Status code (Level Up, 4, ENTER) you want to verify the current software version.
- The console in our video shows to have software version 18 (last 3 digits from CONS number) and more current versions are available.
- Remove the small cover from the back of the console using the Phillips screwdriver.
- This will allow access to the port to which you will connect the FISP or Dongle (software uploader).
- Before connecting the FISP, inspect the connection area and ensure the pins are not bent.
- If any pins are bent, gently and carefully straighten the pins ensuring they are in proper alignment.
- Now connect the FISP or Dongle (software uploader).
- The FISP/Dongle is equipped with a gray ribbon cable that will only allow for connection to the port one way.
- There is a red line that runs along the ribbon cable, and when connected properly; the red line faces toward the bottom.
- Take care not to bend the pins when making the connection.
- The FISP/Dongle is equipped with a gray ribbon cable that will only allow for connection to the port one way.
- Once connected, the software uploader will begin its process. An orange light will come on and begin flashing on the FISP/Dongle.
- This indicates that the software is uploading. (CAUTION: Never disconnect the FISP/Dongle when uploading software. This can result in the console becoming unusable.)
- After a few moments, the flashing light will come up green for PASS or red for FAIL.
- This indicates that the software is uploading. (CAUTION: Never disconnect the FISP/Dongle when uploading software. This can result in the console becoming unusable.)
- Once the upload has finished, disconnect the FISP/Dongle and reinstall the access cover.
- It is now time to configure the console.
- Press any key on the console and it will display NTM CONFIG RQD.
- It is necessary to configure the console so that it knows the equipment type on which it is being used.
- Press Level Up, 8, ENTER.
- CONFIGURATION will appear on the screen.
- Press ENTER.
- Press Level Up to scroll to the CHANGE MACHINE menu option.
- Select CHANGE MACHINE by pressing ENTER.
- NTM CONFIG RQD will appear again.
- Press Level Up or Level Down to find the proper unit type.
- In this case, STEPMILL should be selected and press ENTER.
- The console will flash, and then it will display the saved equipment type and resets the machine for a workout.

- Press Level Up or Level Down to find the proper unit type.
- After completing the configuration of the console, the software upload process is complete.
- CONFIGURATION will appear on the screen.
