This article covers replacing the left bell crank on the Assault Air Bikes.
The image below shows an exploded view of the machine parts involved in this replacement.
Tools Required
- 8mm Hex Wrench
- Crank Puller, 22mm
Removing and Replacing a Bell Crank on an Assault AirBike
- Using the 8mm hex wrench, remove the crank bolt from the left pedal crank arm.
- Thread the crank puller into the crank arm and firmly tighten the top section using the crescent or adjustable wrench. Is this your first time using a crank puller? Watch our video about how to use a crank puller.
Tech Tip
If you do not tighten the tool enough, the threads tend to strip and will ruin your tool or crank arm, if not, both.
- Using the crank arm for support, tighten the bottom section of the crank puller with the crescent wrench. If your crank puller has a built-in handle, you will turn the handle on the tool clockwise. This tightens the crank puller against the crank. As you turn the handle, it pushes the arm free from the shaft.
- Separate the crank arm and pedal assembly from the bike.
- Remove the outer wave washer and set it aside.
- Remove the linkage arm. Lower the left upright arm counter-clockwise and the right end clockwise. You want the left upright arm resting on the ground and the linkage arm hanging straight down.
- Remove the inner wave washer from the bell crank spindle.
Note: Bikes may or may not have plastic washers. If present, remove the plastic washers. - Remove the bell crank bolt. You will need the 8mm hex wrench. To loosen the bolt, turn the wrench to the left (counterclockwise).
- After removing the bolt, you will install the crank puller in its place.
- Remove the bell crank with the crank puller. Do this following the same steps taken to remove the pedal crank.
- Install the new bell crank. It must be in the opposite position from the other side.
- Re-install the bell crank bolt. Apply threadlocker to the bolt and tighten it to secure the bell crank onto the shaft.
- Re-install the inner washer(s) previously removed from the bell crank spindle.
- Re-install the linkage arm. Lift the upright arm from resting on the ground while placing the linkage arm back into place on the bell crank.
- Re-install the outer washer removed earlier.
- Re-install the crank arm and pedal assembly. Apply threadlocker to the crank arm bolt and tighten it to secure the crank arm onto the shaft.
- Check bike operation.
This completes how to replace a left bell crank on an Assault AirBike.
